I have this thing about businesses requesting “just a logo” or designers designing logo’s simply off some instructions from their client without any real thought behind it.
I hate it… A LOT!
A logo needs to be more than just a nice looking image. It needs to work for your business. Whilst its not the star attraction, you could call it your concierge. A small but damn important role.
So, what do I mean by work?
There are five things your logo should do or be.
Lets look at this in more detail.
Is it unique? Your logo needs to stand out from your competitors. Its so easy and tempting to follow the trends. How many logo’s are doing the rounds at the moment that have a watercolour background? After a while they all start to blend together and its hard to tell one business from another.
I’m not saying you can’t use watercolour, you just need to come up with a unique way of applying it.
You wouldn’t use a logo that was soft pastels and included flowers and other feminine characteristics if you were a motor mechanic. Your logo needs to be fit for purpose.
Will people remember your logo once they’ve seen it? If they see your logo will they associate it with your business without seeing the business name? We don’t have to think twice when we see an image of an apple with a little bite taken out of it. We know straight away its for Apple.
Does your logo work across various types of media? Does your logo look just as good on your website as it does on a rubber stamp? What about on a pen? Or clothing labels? A logo with lots of flourishes and colour may look great on your website but how will it look scaled down to postage stamp size? Is it still recognisable as yours? If you love your flourishing logo and don’t want to change it, think about getting a sub-mark added that is still noticeably yours but is more versatile.
5. Does your logo communicate on different levels?
People respond to ideas in different ways. For some it is based on style, yet for others its emotion. Others are drawn by information. Your logo needs to communicate all these ideas to your tribe.
